July 20th Open Night

Posted: July 20, 2010 in 091 Labs

Things have changed gears at 091 Labs over the last week. Thanks to everyone who made last Tuesdays meetup our largest todate. Given how our numbers have grown we have decided to rename our Tuesday meetups Open Nights. In the past we discussed hackerspace matters during our meetups but starting tonight future open nights will be more informal in nature. A new committee is being elected to better meet our needs going forward.

We also held a mini hackathon on Sathurday as part of the 9th Global Synchronous Hackathon. Lots of lessons were learned so we look forward to taking part for a full weekend at the 10th Global Synchronous Hackathon on August 20th. Our second film night on Sunday saw a re-screening of Graffiti Research Labs and Part 1 of Steal this Film. If your free tonight and in Galway come along to our Open Night at 7pm in Exchange House. All are welcome!

We know that we have been somewhat neglecting the site lately. Just to let you know that we have been working on a more up-to-date version which will be going live soon (tonight or tomorrow), and you can check out all the events we have planned this month then. Thanks to Paul Killoran from Starlight Solutions for offering us hosting.

091 Labs Movie Night

Posted: July 11, 2010 in 091 Labs, Hackerspace

We’ll be kicking off a weekly 091 Labs Movie Night with a screening of Graffiti Research Lab: The Complete First Season, a documentary about the GRL, an art group dedicated to integrating and enhancing graffiti and street art with experimental open-source technologies:

“From their origins in the trash room of a non-profit in Manhattan to their emergence as the instigators of an international art movement, Graffiti Research Lab: The Complete First Season documents the adventures of an architect and an engineer who quit their day jobs to develop high-tech tools for the art underground. The film follows the GRL and their network of graffiti artist collaborators (and commercial imitators) across four continents as they write on skyscrapers with lasers, mock advertisers with homemade tools, get in trouble with The Department of Homeland Security and make activism fun again. Primarily using video footage from point-and-shoot digital cameras (“The Pocket School”?) and found-content on the web, the movie’s visual style draws as much from the art of the power point presentation and viral media as conventional documentary cinema. Narrated by GRL co-founders, Roth and Powderly, The Complete First Season makes a humorous and insightful argument for free speech in public, open source in pop culture, the hacker spirit in graffiti and not asking for permission in general. The film was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008.”

Thanks to everyone who made this weeks community meetup. We had a great turnout on the night, with representatives from Galway’s Arts and Engineering/Tech communities discussing the traditional lack of collaboration between their groups and how that could be remedied.  This weekend we’ll be busy getting our space ready for our upcoming workshops and events, which will include a cameraphone video editing class being run by Tom Murphy. Our next weekly community meetup is 7pm Tuesday, July 6th in Exchange House on Fairgreen Road. If you cannot make Tuesday nights then get in contact to arrange an alternative time to visit and say hello.
